Common Mood Profiles

Bipolar I is characterized by manic episodes that last at least seven days or are severe enough to require immediate hospital care. These highs are usually followed by depressive periods. While these shifts are intense, they respond well to a combination of structured therapy and clinical management.

Bipolar II involves a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes. Hypomania is a less severe version of mania but can still cause significant disruptions in focus and decision making. Professional guidance helps stabilize these cycles and provides strategies for long term emotional health.

This disorder involves periods of hypomanic symptoms as well as periods of depressive symptoms lasting for at least two years. Though the highs and lows are not as extreme as other bipolar disorders, the constant fluctuation can be draining. Therapy offers a way to find a consistent emotional baseline.

Major Depression involves a persistent state of low mood, fatigue, and a loss of interest in life. It can make even the smallest tasks feel impossible to complete. Evidence based treatments are highly effective in lifting the weight of depression and restoring a sense of hope.

Mixed episodes occur when symptoms of mania and depression happen at the same time. This can lead to feeling energized and agitated while simultaneously feeling hopeless or sad. Specialized care is essential for identifying these complex states and providing the right interventions for safety and calm.

Rapid cycling describes a pattern where four or more mood episodes occur within a single year. This frequent shifting can be incredibly disruptive to work and family life. At Counseling & Treatment Center of Utah, we focus on identifying triggers and building a robust plan to slow these cycles and regain stability.
